Measure Furniture Before You Buy

That sofa looks perfect in the showroom. Will it look perfect wedged against your radiator, blocking half the hallway? Measure Tools turns your phone into a furniture measuring app: check room dimensions, doorway widths, wall space and the real size of the item you're eyeing β€” all before you spend a cent. If you've ever typed "will my couch fit" into a search bar at 11pm, this page is for you.

Why furniture purchases go wrong

Most wrong-size furniture stories come down to the same handful of mistakes. None of them are about bad math β€” they're about measuring the wrong things.

How Measure Tools helps you check the fit

Measure Tools is an AR measuring app for iOS and Android, free to download. For furniture shopping, four things matter most:

Two true-size 3D box previews in an empty bedroom β€” a tall bookcase footprint against the wall and a bed footprint by the window β€” with the gap between them measured at 1 foot 3.2 inches
Auditioning a layout with true-size boxes: a bookcase against the wall, a bed by the window — and the 1′ 3.2″ (39 cm) gap between them, measured live.
  • Measure the room with your phone. Aim the on-screen target, tap to set your points, and read wall widths, alcove sizes, ceiling heights and doorway openings right on the camera view. Distance, vertical and chain measuring modes cover the "how much space do I actually have" side of the problem.
  • Preview a rough footprint with 3D Box Preview. Enter the width, depth and height from the product listing and place a true-size 3D box right where the furniture would go. Suddenly "95 cm (37 in) deep" stops being a number and becomes a thing you can walk around. Round table instead of a rectangular one? The Cylinder preview does the same with a true-size cylinder. Both previews are included with the Measurements subscription.
  • Save photos with the measurements overlaid. Each saved measurement is a photo of your room with the dimensions drawn on it, so in the store you're not squinting at a notes app β€” you're looking at the wall itself. It's also the cleanest way to keep a project organized: every measurement stays filed in My Projects, and you can add a caption to each β€” “bedroom alcove, left of window” is a lot clearer than a filename.
  • Share before you buy. Send the measurement photo to a partner, a delivery company or the seller. "Will it fit through this?" is a much better question when it comes with a picture and a number attached.

Place real-size furniture in your room (3D Planning)

A box tells you whether the volume fits. The next step up is seeing the actual shape of the furniture in your actual room. With Measure Tools' custom real-size furniture, you place adjustable 3D furniture models β€” sofas, beds, tables, shelves and more β€” at true size in AR, then set each model's dimensions to match the exact item you're considering.

Walk around the model. Check whether the sofa's arm blocks the door swing. Stand in the walkway it leaves behind. Duplicate a chair to try four around the table, move and rotate pieces until the layout works, and delete what doesn't. Because the models are adjustable rather than pulled from any store's catalog, you can match the dimensions of furniture from anywhere β€” a big-box retailer, a local carpenter or a secondhand listing.

The styles-and-materials side of this β€” previewing how a piece looks, not just whether it fits β€” has its own guide: see furniture in your room before you buy. Three features cover this job at different depths: 3D Box Preview gives you a quick true-size volume check, the Cylinder preview does the same for round furniture (both are included with the Measurements subscription), while custom real-size furniture (premium 3D Planning tier) gives you shaped, adjustable models for planning a whole room. Try it free: the Measurements plan includes a starter selection of furniture types; the 3D Planning plan unlocks all adjustable furniture types with unlimited placements.

How plans work: Measure Tools is free to download, with free tools and premium subscriptions. The Measurements plan unlocks every measuring mode and unlimited measurement folders. The 3D Planning plan includes everything in Measurements, plus floor plans and the full library of 31 adjustable furniture types with unlimited placements.

Planning a bigger project? 3D Planning also lets you build a floor plan of the whole room and view it in 2D or 3D. See our floor plan app guide.

The 5-step "will it fit" workflow

  1. Measure the available wall and floor space. Measure the usable wall width (between obstacles, not just corner to corner), the depth you can give up before walkways suffer, and every doorway and hallway on the delivery route.
  2. Check the item's width, depth and height. Pull the exact dimensions from the product listing β€” including packaging dimensions if the item ships assembled. If you're replacing an existing piece, AR-measure the old one for a baseline.
  3. Place a true-size preview. Use 3D Box Preview to drop a box with those exact dimensions where the furniture would stand β€” the Cylinder preview does the same for round pieces (both included with the Measurements subscription) β€” or, with 3D Planning, place an adjustable furniture model and set it to the listing's measurements.
  4. Walk around and check clearance. Do doors still open fully? Can you walk past without turning sideways? Does it block a window or a heater? This is the check a tape measure alone can't do.
  5. Save and share the measurements. Save the measurement photos so the numbers are with you in the store, and share them with whoever needs a say β€” or with the delivery crew. A photo with the dimensions drawn on it settles "will it fit through this?" faster than any list of numbers.
Step 3 and 4 in action: boxes with the listing’s exact dimensions standing in the real spot, checked from every angle before anything is bought.

What people check most often

Sofas and sectionals

The classic. Check the usable wall width, the depth against your walkway, and every door and corner on the way in β€” sofas are the item most likely to fit the room and not the route. Preview the chaise side of a sectional both ways before you commit to left or right.

Beds

A bed frame is usually 10–15 cm (4–6 in) larger than the mattress size on the box. Preview the frame's real footprint and make sure you keep enough clearance on each side to actually make the bed β€” and that drawers or a lifting frame have room to open.

Dining tables

The table is never the problem; the chairs are. Allow roughly 60 cm (24 in) per seated person and about 90 cm (35 in) behind chairs so people can sit down and stand up. Duplicating a chair model around a table in AR makes this obvious in seconds.

Rugs

Rug sizing is notoriously hard to eyeball β€” a 160Γ—230 and a 200Γ—290 look nearly the same in a product photo and completely different on your floor. Preview the exact rectangle on the actual floor and check how it sits relative to the sofa's front legs.

Cabinets and shelves

Height matters here: measure to the ceiling, to sloped attic walls, and above skirting boards and window sills. A vertical AR measurement tells you whether that 236 cm (93 in) wardrobe clears your 240 cm (94.5 in) ceiling with enough room to tilt it upright during assembly β€” a step almost everyone forgets.

Moving into a rental

You visit once, then decide everything from memory. Spend ten minutes of the viewing AR-measuring walls, doorways and alcoves, and save the measurement photos. When you're furniture shopping later, the flat comes with you.

How accurate is it? (Honest answer)

AR measurements are excellent for planning and estimates β€” which is exactly what furniture shopping needs β€” but they are not a laser and we won't pretend otherwise. Accuracy depends on lighting, surface texture and how steadily your phone tracks the room. iPhones and iPads with a LiDAR scanner generally measure more accurately than devices without it.

Practical rules for furniture-grade measuring:

Curious why every AR measuring app carries this caveat? It comes down to how phones track the world. We break it down in why AR measuring apps are inaccurate β€” and how to get the best results anyway.

Measure Tools vs. Apple Measure for furniture shopping

Apple's built-in Measure app is genuinely useful for grabbing a quick, simple dimension β€” if that's all you need, use it. Furniture shopping usually needs more than one number, and that's where a dedicated tool earns its place.

Apple Measure Measure Tools
Platforms iOS only iOS and Android
Quick single measurements Yes β€” its core strength Yes, plus chain, vertical, angle and area modes
Saved measurements Screenshot manually Measurement photos saved in the app, organized into folders β€” unlimited folders with the Measurements subscription

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a sofa will fit before buying it?

Measure three things, not one: the usable wall space (between switches, vents and door swings β€” not corner to corner), the depth you can spare before walkways shrink below about 75–90 cm (30–35 in), and every door and hallway on the delivery route. Then place a true-size preview with the sofa's listed dimensions in the room and walk around it β€” fit is about the space it leaves, not just the space it takes.

Is there an app to see if furniture fits in your room?

Yes β€” Measure Tools measures the room in AR and then places a true-size preview of the piece in the actual space: a 3D box or cylinder with the listing's exact dimensions, or an adjustable 3D furniture model. You see the real footprint against your real walls, doors and walkways before spending anything. Works on iPhone and Android.

How do I check if furniture will fit through the door?

Measure the door's clear opening (the frame, minus the door itself if it can't open fully) and compare it against the item's smallest two dimensions β€” bulky furniture usually comes in tilted, so the diagonal matters more than the width. Check every door, hallway corner and stairwell on the route, and use the packaging dimensions if it ships assembled.

Can I preview furniture at its real size in my room?

Yes. Measure Tools places adjustable 3D furniture models β€” sofas, beds, tables, shelves and more β€” at true size in AR, and you set each model's dimensions to match the exact item you're considering, from any store, carpenter or secondhand listing. Walk around it, check the clearances, rearrange the layout, and decide with your eyes instead of your imagination. We've dedicated a full guide to this: seeing furniture in your room before you buy.

Check if it fits before you buy

The cost of checking is ten minutes with your phone. The cost of not checking is a restocking fee, a return shipment, or a sofa that lives at a weird angle for the next five years. Get Measure Tools β€” free to download β€” and know before you buy.
